Environmental, Health & Safety Manager

Job Description

  1. Responsible for coordination of the environmental strategy, management systems and compliance
  • Lead the implementation and maintenance of environmental management systems, controls and optimisation across the Americas sites to meet legal, regulatory and compliance requirements in all jurisdictions.
  • Responsible for the environmental management system (and ISO14001 where applicable) across the Americas region.
  • Coordinating and managing the extension of ISO 14001 roll out as required
  • Manage all Americas internal and external environmental audits, environmental investigations and associated action plans.
  • Coordinate major environmental incidents and investigations and associated action and disclosure plans across the Americas
  • Directly implement the programme for RS Americas, Inc. and Risoul operations and provide support / co-ordination to Synovos to implement their plans

 

  1. Lead activities in the Americas 2030 advancing sustainability goals
  • Lead strategy, targets, project execution and reporting for RS Americas, Inc. carbon reduction (including net zero and SBTi targets), packaging, waste and recycling and transport, in line with Group ESG approach and 2030 goals. 
  • Coordinate facilities and operations teams to deliver site carbon and energy reduction in line with net zero plan – utilising a new Environmental Management Dashboard (EMD)
  • Project manage large capital / technology-based decarbonisation projects for the operations e.g. switch to low carbon HVAC systems or solar installation, as well as the switch to electric / hydrogen transport solutions
  • Provide support to supply chain teams to deliver sustainable packaging and transport approach, targets, reporting and assurance
  • Provide advice and support to deliver Group’s wider goals relating to customer, supplier and product sustainability, in support of a net zero value chain by 2050.

 

  1. Lead sustainability performance & reporting
  • Manage the reporting of environmental data for all sites in the Americas
  • Coordinate Americas environmental reporting (quarterly and end of year) and annual assurance process
  • Establish effective and robust environmental data, reporting and management systems in new acquisitions, before implementing a proactive sustainability programme aligned to the Group’s 2030 ESG goals
  • Engage with corporate stakeholders teams (Comms, Marketing, People, Customers, Sales, Investors) at an Americas and Group level to promote NA Environment progress and future plans to internal and external stakeholders

 

  1. Health & Safety leadership, culture and engagement
  • Ensure that Managers, Supervisors and staff comply with safety legislation and that safety policy and practices are adopted and adhered to. Carry out regular inspections to check policies and procedures are being properly implemented
  • Ensure risk assessments are suitable, sufficient and performed, along with the ongoing development of policies, procedures and guidance in line with statutory requirements and best practice.
  • Maintain an effective management review forum (monthly meeting) to review compliance performance. Provide recommendations to management with regards to changes of procedures and processes at the earliest opportunity where tracked data, trends, observation or audit identifies heightened risk in a particular area.
  • Work with Operational leaders to drive best performance and coordinate where applicable with a network of regional EH&S managers and champions
  • Develop and execute training initiatives to ensure internal resource are sufficiently aware of the relevant compliance areas for them to execute their duties effectively.
  • Coach and mentor Environmental, Health & Safety Advisors and Delegates, to develop their knowledge and capability so they perform their duties confidently in a self-sufficient manner.

About the role

Responsible for the delivery, compliance and reporting of RS Americas, Inc. environmental management and sustainability programme – aligned to the Group’s 2030 ESG plan and advancing sustainability goals.

  • Environmental management and compliance: responsibility for coordinating the implementation and maintenance of environmental management systems (ISO 14001) that meet legal, regulatory and compliance requirements in our Americas jurisdictions - ensuring continuous improvement and overseeing management of any major incidents / investigations.
  • 2030 advancing sustainability goal and actions: working with the Group Sustainability Lead to ensure the Americas net zero, SBTi, packaging, waste and recycling and transport implementation plans (strategy, targets, project execution and reporting) are in line with Group requirements.
  • Sustainability reporting: coordinate sustainability reporting, assurance and engagement to report to: ESG Committee and Board, Americas Leadership Team, Americas ESG Committee and external stakeholders e.g. annual ESG reporting suite, SBTi, CDP, TCFD, ISSB/SASB, GRI, SECR, investors, customers etc. Prepare the Americas for adherence to future sustainability policy changes and reporting directives.   • Health & Safety leadership, culture and engagement: Work alongside a team of regional Environment, Health and Safety (EH&S) managers and champions, and Functional Managers, to ensure risk assessments are suitable and sufficient, along with the ongoing development of policies, procedures and guidance in line with statutory requirements and best practice.

 

What we’re looking for

Essential

  • Previous responsibility for managing environment, sustainability, health and safety programmes in complex, multi-site organisations
  • Experience of implementing management systems, establishing controls and optimisation programmes to ensure compliance, high performance, and robust reporting
  • Deep experience of co-ordinating environmental and safety reporting for multi-sites
  • Demonstrable experience of net zero management, project execution and reporting
  • Experience of managing business critical environmental activities or incidents
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and leaderships skills, able to collaborate with and influence direct and indirect teams across the matrix to deliver
  • Highly developed influencing and communication skills
  • Capital, system and people project management skills
  • Ability to evaluate and translate complex technical details into digestible communications material for a variety of audiences.
  • Awareness of cultural environments and able to adapt approach accordingly.
  • Influencing a culture of sustainability and organisational behaviour change
  • Strong work ethic and appetite for change and improvement.
  • Educated to degree level or equivalent

Desirable

  • Experience from a relevant industry: industrial, distribution, electronics, manufacturing, MRO, retail, business to business, packaging etc.
  • Formal environmental qualification, preferably chartered status
